About the film
Few films have traveled a stranger path from box-office disappointment to cultural phenomenon. Through midnight screenings, DVD discovery, and endless late-night conversations, this enigmatic blend of science fiction, suburban satire, teenage angst, and existential mystery became one of the defining cult films of the 21st century. Its enduring appeal lies not in providing answers but in inviting interpretation. Dream logic, haunting imagery, a legendary soundtrack, and an atmosphere of melancholy unease combine to create a cinematic experience that feels both deeply personal and cosmically vast. Each viewing reveals new connections, new theories, and new reasons for fascination. Anchored by a breakthrough performance from Jake Gyllenhaal, the film occupies a rare place in modern cinema: beloved by devoted fans, endlessly discussed, and impossible to fully explain. More than two decades later, it remains a quintessential midnight movie — one that practically demands a post-screening conversation.
Content Warnings: Mental health themes, disturbing imagery, teen substance use, strong language, violence, death, emotional distress, and existential themes.

This screening and the discussion that follows will be hosted by Sanford Hess, curator of the Arthouse Experience and former operator of the Art Theater.
"My personal relationship with Donnie Darko is complex. Because I love it, I chose to show it as one of the first Late Night films at the Art Theater. However, that screening turned into one of my worst experiences as a novice movie exhibitor (you'll have to attend this screening to hear that story!). However, I am excited to be part of this event. This film definitely rewards repeat watching and discussion. There are many possible interpretations, so we look forward to hearing members of the audience explain their different takes on the film to each other!”
Sanford believes in film as a means to transport us, to immerse ourselves in another time, place, and people. Join us for this trip back in time to the late '80s when the world was a little more innocent and less cynical.
